De Waterkant

From a concept stage, a liveable dwelling within a confined space that also needs to meet the requirements of architect’s studio, and upper class guest house is to be developed.

Special attention was to be given to the needs of the client, human scale, spatial relations, aesthetics, practical planning issues, standard regulations, the use of windows, sun protection and all other climatic conditions.

Demonstrations by means of sections on how the proposed spaces of lower floors and upper floors connect, had to be done to give rise to a design best siuted for the site in question.

the design: As per client, breif and site analysis, the following requirements had to be                         met

A flat concrete roof.

A mono- or double pitched roof (Fibre cement sheets, tiles or metal)

Garage space for 1 x Fiat 500 + Vespa GT 300

Wine rack / cellar

2 x Suites + Main Bedroom

the project: Commissioned to design a new visitor's information centre and museum on the south-eastern corner of Scheiding and Paul Kruger Streets.

The Council wants this to be a place that they can be proud of. A building which, like the Victorian Hotel for instance,or Baker,s station building, may have a significance of its own.

It can be an icon of its time, but needs to be part of the streetscape, and take cognisance of the good and bad of the context.

To assimilate the development process from Concept to Design Synthesis, one has to grasp a certain principle derived from a part of flora, the Tree. The outward growth of a tree root and brunch system thereby, creating a radial formation of spaces around a core function in the middle, a place to unify people, talk, and enjoy the experience....... Just a pleasent place to be.

Requirements as per brief, site and client analysis:

Tourist information space and office space to support it

Museum of the history of Pretoria

Auditorium for 150 people:(both film shows and lectures  will be held here)

Coffee shop serving breakfasts, light lunches and snacks though-out the day:seating 100 people

Ablution facilities to serve the building

Parking will be off-site in the new Gautrain terminal next to the station.
